Sveta Petka is an Eastern Orthodox Saint, also known as Sveta Petka Paraskeva, whose name literally means “Saint Friday”. Celebrated in Serbia, Russia, the Ukraine, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Greece, and other Christian Orthodox countries, she originally predates Orthodoxy as she was a Pagan Goddess. There is a church in honour of Sveta Petka in Beograd (Belgrade), the capital of Serbia, with holy waters that run under the church said to be imbued with her healing energies.
Sveta Petka was originally said to have been a weaver, and so connects with wool, and spinning thread. She is celebrated and welcomed during childbirth in Orthodox households, with prayers given to her for safe delivery. Sveta Petka is said to protect mothers and children.
